What happens if my vehicle fails its WoF?
You'll receive a list of items that need to be repaired. We can quote and carry out the required repairs to help you pass. A free recheck is available within 28 days at any MotorHub location. You may only drive the vehicle to a repairer or for a WoF recheck, and only if it is safe to do so.

Failed a WoF? Get a free recheck at any AMI MotorHub Service Centre within 28 days. If your vehicle fails a WoF and gets repaired, we will recheck the repair and pass the vehicle if it's compliant.

A WoF is a mandatory safety inspection required by NZTA (Waka Kotahi). It confirms a vehicle is safe to operate on New Zealand roads at the time of inspection. Most privately owned light vehicles must hold a current WoF to be legally driven.
Yes — most privately owned cars, utes, vans and 4WDs require a WoF. Heavy vehicles and commercial passenger vehicles require a Certificate of Fitness (CoF) instead.
- New vehicles — first WoF is valid for 3 years from first registration
- Vehicles registered after 1 January 2000 — every 12 months
- Vehicles registered before 1 January 2000 — every 6 months

No. A WoF is a snapshot safety check only. It confirms roadworthiness at the time of inspection but does not assess long-term reliability or overall mechanical condition.
A standalone WoF takes around 45 minutes. If bundled with a service, it adds around 30 minutes.

Yes. If you renew within 14 days before it expires, the new WoF starts from the original expiry date — so you don't lose any remaining time.
No. A WoF confirms the vehicle is safe to drive. Rego confirms the vehicle is licensed for use on the road. You need both to legally drive on public roads.
A WoF applies to most privately owned light vehicles. Heavy vehicles, rental vehicles, motorhomes, taxis and other passenger service vehicles require a CoF instead.
